The Washington Fuel Cell Summit

On June 19, 2012, Jeff Serfass, Managing Director at California Hydrogen Business Council and President of the Hydrogen Education Foundation, welcomed top hydrogen and fuel cell industry executives, including Cryo- Gas publisher, J. R. “Buzz” Campbell, to The Washington Fuel Cell Summit in Washington DC.

The summit was sponsored by the Hydrogen Education Foundation (hydrogeneducationfoundation. org), the National Fuel Cell Research Center (nfcrc.uci.edu), and the Technology Transition Corporation (ttcorp.com), which advocates for renewable and clean energy industries.

The one-day summit gathered world experts on hydrogen to examine four key market areas of the fuel cell and hydrogen energy industry: the commercial success of stationary fuel cells, which operate on natural gas or biomethane; the development and commercialization of fuel cell vehicles and buses; fuel sources for fuel cells such as natural gas and biomethane for stationary fuel cells, hydrogen fueling stations for fuel cell vehicles, and sources for renewable hydrogen; and the commercial success of fuel cell forklifts. Participants interested in getting some first-hand experience with new hydrogen technologies could test drive advanced fuel cell electric vehicles at the summit’s always-popular “Ride and Drive Event.”

Speakers from government agencies and leading fuel cell companies across the country spoke at the summit. Heather Zichal, Deputy Assistant to the President for Energy and Climate Change, highlighted the importance of alternative energy sources like fuel cells in reducing our nation’s imports of crude oil by over one million barrels per day and noted that fuel cell (FC) development yielded 900 new patent filings in 2011. Zichal also remarked on the significant increase in backup power being provided by hydrogen-based FCs.
