Upheaval of the US cryogenic tank and trailer landscape

On my way back from the GAWDA conference last week in Savannah, Georgia, I couldn’t help but think about how much the cryogenic tank and trailer industry in the US has been transformed in only a few short years. It’s barely recognisable from what it was only even a year or two ago.

This made me look back on a column I wrote for gasworld four years ago, in January 2012, titled ‘Past, present and future of the cryogenic equipment industry’. I couldn’t help but remark how much this had all come  true, especially in the US, over the last few years. Multiple acquisitions, a major bankruptcy and a very notable start-up have all significantly contributed to a major transformation of the cryogenic tank and trailer supply landscape in the US in just a few, short years.

How did this happen? A multiplicity of causes coincided simultaneously in multiple areas around the globe. In North America, the boom and decline of domestic LNG demand over the past several years has been the single-most contributing factor to this transformation; thanks to the cost differential between natural gas and other petrol-based energy alternatives, the need for LNG infrastructure skyrocketed. Demand for LNG, and the necessary infrastructure to support it, was the main driving force that transformed the cryogenic tank and trailer landscape in the US, triggering large investments in production capacity by the major manufacturers.
