Chillers, Cheers, and Cannabis. Carbon dioxide is supplied to a wide range of industries where it is used in myriad ways. Each year we cover this dynamic market and seem never to be at loss for reporting on interesting applications and changing supply schemes. This year we chose to look at how CO2 was being used in food and beverage markets and were surprised to find that beyond our industries staple of chilling and freezing applications, a few new super-heated markets were keeping CO2 suppliers busy.

As Maura Garvey discusses in her CO2 Market Report, CO2-based refrigeration deployment in North America has jumped from almost nothing to about one-third of new equipment purchases in the past year. And growing even faster than the switch from HFCs to alternative refrigerants are microbreweries, another great market for CO2 suppliers. The legalization of cannabis in parts of America also has moved that business out of the basement and into large warehouse growing spaces, which has opened up a world of opportunity for CO2 and other gases, and their related equipment suppliers. Our Specialty Gas Report supplement tackles the big markets for ultra high purity hydrocarbons, which include food and growing markets. Read about all of these topics and more in our May issue.
