3D printing and AI for steelmaking to receive £14m Govt funding

Funding worth £13.7m has been awarded to projects that aim to drive energy efficiency, productivity and growth across key manufacturing industries through the use of digital technology such as 3D printing and artificial intelligence (AI).

Part of the UKRI-led Sustainable Smart Factory Competition, the funding has been split between twelve projects that will harness 3D printing at record scale, AI to make steel-making more productive and big data to make century-old baking machinery more energy efficient.

One of the successful projects awarded funding as part of the Made Smarter Innovation Challenge includes LEAD Factory, led by Photocentric, which has created first-of-its-kind technology that will enable products to be 3D printed at scale using recycle materials.

Reducing Energy Consumption and Material Loss in Steel Production Using Predictive Machine Learning, led by Deep.Meta will use machine learning to boost sustainability in the carbon-intensive steel manufacturing industry.
