Sustainable management. Two words that we might argue are about to take on renewed significance, on several levels. As we close the book on 2022 and look ahead to both 2023 and beyond, the global economy shows concerning signs of deceleration; at the same time, a trilemma of waste, resource security and decarbonisation presents urgent challenges to be met. The world is increasingly torn between grasping short-term stimuli and cultivating long-term sustainability.
Upholding sustainable management – while delivering continued value to shareholders – during such turbulent times is a challenge for any business leader. This embodies the gauntlet thrown down to those in the industrial gases industry, where successfully achieving return on investment is fused with a supply chain responsibility to so many customer industries and, such is its inherent knowledge of so many molecules and innovative energy technologies, an invaluable role exists in decarbonisation.
On the eve of gasworld’s Clean Energies edition, we sit down with a leader who so humbly suggests he will leave no ‘concrete legacy’ in his current position, such is the nature of the task ahead of him; a veteran of the industry who believes in the importance of the ecosystem on every level, from sustainability and circular economies through to local cultures and the people that comprise the business.
