ABB to support Northern Lights carbon capture and storage project

Global technology company ABB will supply key technological solutions for two carbon dioxide (CO2) carriers that will transport captured industrial emissions to storage as part of the Northern Lights carbon capture and storage (CCS) project.

The company will provide the shaft generator system with permanent magnet technology, which will generate electric power for all onboard systems, increasing the vessels fuel efficiency and reducing overall emissions.

To be constructed by Chinese shipbuilder Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company (DSIC), the two vessels will transport CO2 captured from industrial emitters to an onshore terminal in Øygarden, Norway.

The CO2 will then be delivered by pipeline to dedicated reservoirs 2.6km under the seabed in North Sea for permanent storage. According to ABB, each of the 130m ships will be able to carry up to 7,500m2 of liquefied CO2 in purpose-built pressurised cargo tanks.
