ABP trials hydrogen-fuelled tractor in UK-first

Associated British Ports (ABP) has become the first UK port operator to trial a hydrogen-fuelled tractor in its container terminal at the Port of Immingham on the east coast of England.

Announced yesterday (4th Jan), the Terberg hydrogen terminal tractor joint pilot project was designed to showcase the decarbonisation of port operations and is considered an important step in the creation, delivery and use of hydrogen at the port.

With initial feasibility funding provided by the Department for Transport’s Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition, a second round of funding was granted by ORE Catapult through Innovate UK’s Hydrogen Innovation Initiative (HII).

Commenting on the project, Simon Bird, Regional Director of the Humber ports, said, “This demonstration of using hydrogen in port equipment in Immingham has been able to highlight the challenges and benefits of using this zero-emissions energy in our port.”
