African project could provide many gains

The Angola LNG project is likely to provide the country with a number of benefits including environmental conservation and proceeds from the sale of gas, as the scheme is expected to produce up to 5 million tpy of gas as of 2012.

Closing the II Conference and Exposition on Surveying and Production in the Deep Waters off the West African Coast, the country’s oil minister, Desiderio Costa, noted that Angola would gain from environmental conservation as well as from the sale of gas.

Costa is reported to have said that the Angolan government had prioritised the progressive reduction of the amount of gas burned off in oil activities, with the target of eventually using this entirely for domestic and industrial use by 2010.

The oil minister said that the sector faced numerous challenges in the coming years, which would require the implementation of more organised strategies, considering the development of the oil and gas sector on the African continent.
