Air Liquide cools concrete for bypass

Air Liquide recently announced that its CryoCrete Technology would cool concrete for a bypass bridge being built for a new route in the United States.

The reason for the bypass bridge is because of traffic congestion at a well known beauty spot in western United States. The Hoover Dam, one of the largest hydroelectric dams in the world, often causes slow traffic along Highway 93.

The bypass bridge is a project of the United States government as well as the states of Arizona and Nevada. Air Liquide is a subcontractor on the project to provide liquid nitrogen and CryoCrete technology.

Air Liquide will use its CryoCrete technology to cool concrete mixtures to exacting specifications by using liquid nitrogen. CryoCrete injection technology was used in the Hoover Dam bypass bridge project to reduce the temperature of the concrete being used in the bridge’s footings prior to it being pumped down to molds resting nearly 300 ft into the canyon. The technology resulted in cooling the concrete some 20 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit and was integral in delivering a quality pour and precise curing necessary to ensure the utmost structural integrity of the bridge.
