Air Liquide to launch its first biomethane facility in China

As the ongoing energy transition forces companies to look to cleaner forms of fuel, energy giant Air Liquide has expanded its low carbon approach by launching a biomethane production facility in Huai’an City – known as China’s ‘canal city’, in the Jiangsu Province of China.

With a capacity of 75 GWh (gigawatt hours) per year, the plant will turn incoming agricultural and livestock waste from local farms into biogas before upgrading it to biomethane.

Aligning with Air Liquide’s Sustainable Objectives and its ADVANCE strategic plan, the biomethane unit will contribute to a circular carbon economy by recycling the digestate by-product to be used in production of bio-fertilisers.

By expanding its China operations, the company is planning to exploit the country’s high potential for biomethane, supported by government plants to promote the valorisation of waste to help develop rural China.
