Norway-based Aker Carbon Capture (Aker) will work alongside UK waste management company Viridor to provide a pre-FEED study for the Runcorn carbon capture and storage (CCS) project located around 20km from Liverpool at Viridor’s Runcorn EfW (energy-from-waste) facility.
Announced today (7th Dec), the collaboration aims to explore the installation of a carbon capture plant in the HyNet cluster, part of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) Track 1 sequencing process, capturing around one million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year.
According to Aker, upon start-up the facility will be one of the first large scale carbon capture projects at an EfW facility in the world.
Referring to Viridor’s ‘ambitious’ decarbonisation targets and the CCS project, Valborg Lundegaard, CEO at Aker, said, “It can play an instrumental role in helping reach Britain’s climate goals, and together we see CCS as a great opportunity to create green jobs in the UK.”
