Sustainable energy start-up Amogy is joining forces with commodities trading giant Trafigura to study the use of ammonia as a carrier to transport clean hydrogen from producer to consumer.
The study will explore the potential for the deployment of ammonia cracking technology to support the growing hydrogen market and its supply to pipelines, fuel cell vehicles, steel manufacturing, and thermal power plants.
Due to its high volumetric hydrogen density, ammonia is considered a promising hydrogen carrier and, through cracking, operators can decompose ammonia towards hydrogen and nitrogen over a catalyst.
By tapping into the potential shown by ammonia, Trafigura aims to assess the production of future low-carbon sources of energy that can enable the high-volume transportation of zero emission fuels.
