ArcelorMittal launches $200m carbon capture project at Belgium steel plant

Steel giant ArcelorMittal S.A (ArcelorMittal) has inaugurated its flagship carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) project at its steel manufacturing plant in Ghent, Belgium.

Launched yesterday (8th Dec), the €200m ($211m) plant utilises carbon recycling technology developed by project partner LanzaTech to transform carbon-rich waste gases from the steelmaking process and from waste biomass into advanced ethanol.

Dubbed ‘Steelanol’, the project will produce 80m litres of advanced ethanol once at full capacity to serve industries such as transport fuels, paints, plastics, clothing and even cosmetic perfume.
