ArcelorMittal will trial carbon capture technology at its steel plant in Gent, Belgium and one of its North American sites to decarbonise the steelmaking process.
Unveiled today (27th Oct), the plans are part of a multi-year trial agreement inked between the global steel and mining company, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering (MHIENG), BHP and Mitsubishi Development.
With the steel industry estimated to account for approximately seven to nine percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, the consortium hopes that it can pave the way to a cleaner future with the deployment of MHIENG’s carbon capture technology.
Dubbed KM CDR Process™, the proprietary technology was developed with Kansai Electric Power and has since been deployed in 14 plants globally. The trial will be the first time ArcelorMittal has integrated it at one of its sites.
