Axens, Chiyoda join forces to advance hydrogen supply chain

Energy solutions specialist Axens has partnered with Japan-based Chiyoda Corporation (Chiyoda) in a move that aims to advance the hydrogen supply chain by using methylcyclohexane (MCH) as a liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC).

MCH is a chemically stable liquid produced from toluene and hydrogen that can be handled in a liquid state at ambient temperature and pressure. Its inherent properties make it an ideal tool to overcome challenges associated with the long distance transportation of hydrogen – an economy that could be as large as 150m tonnes annually in 2030, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).

By combining Chiyoda’s SPERA Hydrogen technology that produces hydrogen and toluene from MCH with Axen’s Toluene Hydrogenation technology, the partners aim to enable a fast track approach for hydrogen project implementation and provide a single point of contact to reduce the burden of customer coordination between licensors.

Commenting on the partnership, Patrick Sarrazin, Executive Vice President New Development & Transformation at Axens, said, “Signing this alliance will enable Chiyoda and Axens to jointly develop worldwide hydrogen markets thus accelerating and scaling up the hydrogen supply chain, contributing to a long-term carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions reduction, to be on track to Net Zero.”
