BASF, Samsung Heavy Industries join forces for maritime carbon capture

German sustainable chemistry specialist BASF will collaborate with shipbuilding company Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) to explore the potential of capturing CO2 onboard maritime vessels using BASF’s OASE blue technology for flue gas applications.

Having signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the trade show Gastech 2022 in Milan, Italy, the partners will work together to conduct a marinisation study, in addition to the engineering design and construction of the carbon capture unit.

In line with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO)’s strategy to decarbonise shipping, SHI will evaluate the feasibility of installing BASF’s OASE blue technology onboard maritime vessels.

OASE blue is a large-scale capture technology that enables the commercial utilisation of CO2 by capturing it from flue gas through the post-combustion process.
