Construction of a new bio-gas plant in Myanmar has been completed in cooperation with India’s Tele Corporation and the electricity generated is due to be distributed to a village in northern Mandalay, as part of a middle eastern plan for energy effectiveness.
The construction of the Pesinngone bio-gas plant in the Mingyan township is aimed at the effective use of energy in the seven member countries of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC). The initiative’s member countries consists of Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bhutan and Nepal and it is thought that around 200 households in the Kokke village, of the northern Mandalay division of the cooperation, will soon be electrified by bio-gas generated from the new plant.
BIMSTEC was originally formed in 1997 with five member countries sharing the objective of promoting multi-sectoral cooperation for economic and social progress of the region, with the first summit of the grouping held in Bangkok, Thailand in 2004.
Myanmar joined the BIMSTEC as a founder member in 1997, soon after integration into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and is to take over chairmanship of the group in 2008 under an alphabetical rotation system.
