Biogas producers join forces to produce bio-LNG

German company BALANCE Erneuerbare Energien GmbH (BALANCE) is to collaborate on a joint venture with biogas specialist EnviTec Biogas AG to produce carbon dioxide (CO2)-free bio-liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Planned for construction in Brandenburg, near Berlin, the partner’s new bio-LNG liquefaction plant will provide renewable fuel for commercial and heavy-duty transport, including filling capabilities for tanker trucks.

The deal marks a milestone in the decarbonisation of the transport sector for the two companies. Revealing that interest has already been shown in the venture, Olaf von Lehmden, CEO, EnviTec Biogas AG, said, “We’ve already had inquiries from filling station chains and the logistics industry, as well as from other companies that want to convert their fleets to bio-LNG, which is as low-emission as it gets.” 

This push towards bio-LNG has been accelerated by the RED II directive, which states that fuel distributors must achieve a 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of their products by 2030.
