Bottled oxygen to be allowed on commercial flights

New rules are being introduced to make it easier for more than one million Americans to fly.

The rules have been adopted by the Federal Aviation Administration in America and will allow airlines to permit patients to travel with portable oxygen concentrators during all segments of the journey.

Previously people relying on supplemental oxygen faced a series of obstacles if they wanted to fly, including paying an additional fee to rent oxygen equipment from the airlines for the flight segment of their journey then arranging for the own oxygen during stopovers and at their final destination.

Passengers complained the system forced some patients to not fly. The new rule, which comes into effect on August 11, does not force airlines to allow passengers to travel with bottled oxygen, instead it will be at the discretion of the individual airline.
