Case study: A multi-period model for optimal production planning in gases

Cryogenic air separation techniques to produce nitrogen, oxygen and argon with high quality requirements are energy-intensive industrial processes that need large quantities of electricity due to the compression and liquefaction demand.

This resource is, therefore, the main operating cost and the efficient use of it is a critical issue in the production planning.

Messer Ibérica is an industrial gas company belonging to the Messer Group, which has been operating air separation units (ASUs) in Spain since 1970 and supplying nitrogen and oxygen through a pipeline network to a large number of companies in the petrochemical cluster of Tarragona. Furthermore, the company is gradually increasing the liquid business selling nitrogen, oxygen and argon via trucks as well as its cylinder business.
