Chief Executive of the Carbon Capture and Storage Association (CCSA), Ruth Herbert criticised the UK Government’s Budget 2021, released this week.
With the UK Government releasing its Net Zero Strategy last week, detailing its plans to store 20-30 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year by 2030, it was deemed necessary for track 2 clusters to be operational by 2027.
The Budget revealed that the Government was steadfast in its commitment to allocate £1bn to support carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) initiatives, in addition to proceeding with the first two track 1 clusters, with no mention of track 2 clusters.
Commenting on the announcement, Herbert said, “Today’s budget fails to provide much-needed clarity on the timeline for the track 2 cluster process and the wider deployment of all CCUS clusters in the UK.”
