The fifth International Conference on Energy Renewal, Conservation, and Education (CIER 2007)closed in Havana this week with using hydrogen as fuel as a hot topic.
At the CIER 2007 conference Thursday, studies involving the impact of hydrogen as a fuel for motor vehicles and its cost-effectiveness were discussed.
Currently in Cuba, research on obtaining hydrogen from electricity generated by bagasse (a residue of sugar cane crushing) and through electrolysis is being conducted. Electrolysis is a method of separating electrolytes via electricity.
Also discussed at the conference, namely by Elena Vigil of the University of Havana’s Physics Department, was the use of the sun as an energy solution. Vigil argues the promise of photovoltaic conversion, solar components, and hydrogen as viable fuels for the future.
