Independent energy specialist and assurance provider DNV has provided advice to Italy-based Snam Group (Snam) following its purchase of two floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) to strengthen Italy’s energy security.
Purchased from Golar LNG and BW Gas Cyprus Limited (BW), the two vessels – the Golar Tundra and the BW Singapore – are equipped with a storage capacity of 170,000m3 of LNG with a nominal continuous regasification capacity of 5bn m3/yr (cubic metres per year).
The vessels can operate as both FSRUs and liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers and have a combined capacity that should cover around 15% of Italy’s yearly gas needs.
By reducing its reliance on Russian gas, the EU hopes to increase the share of imported LNG in the European Gas mix.
