A new project named FirstBio2Shipping aims to decarbonise the shipping sector by producing Bio-liquefied natural gas (LNG) to be used as a marine fuel. Taking part in the joint effort is energy-from-waste expert Attero, green energy supplier Nordsol and LNG distribution firm Titan.
As part of a shared initiative to reduce emissions, the partners will build a Bio-LNG production plant at a waste processing site in Wilp, the Netherlands. At the site, Attero will process domestic biowaste into six million Nm3 (normal cubic metres) of biogas per year.
Nordsol and Attero will then upgrade the biogas to 2,400 tonnes per year high-purity Bio-LNG and 5,000 tonnes per year liquid Bio-CO2.
The fuel will be off-taken by Titan to be used in the maritime industry as a cost-effective replacement for fossil fuels.
