Specialty chemicals company Evonik is supporting the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions with its PuraMem VOC membrane separation technology for flare gas recovery.
Due to various economical or technical challenges, part of the associated gas that is produced during oil production is flared. The often-heavy hydrocarbon rich emissions cannot be used at the well head, resulting in global oil production sites burning approximately 140bn cubic metres of natural gas annually.
According to the Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership, this causes more than 300m tonnes of CO2 to be emitted to the atmosphere.
