In a critical milestone towards the global roll-out of industrial carbon capture and storage (CCS), the world’s first commercial carbon capture facility on a steel production plant has been launched in the Middle East.
Not only is the Al Reyadah project in Abu Dhabi the first commercial-scale carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) facility in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), it is also the first to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from an iron and steel works in the world.
In total, the project is expected to capture and store 800,000 tonnes of annual CO2 emissions.
Developed by Abu Dhabi’s Carbon Capture Company Al Reyadah, the project is a joint venture between Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and the clean technology and renewable energy arm of the Abu Dhabi Government Masdar, holding 51% and 49%, respectively.
