First of its kind Malaysian LNG bunkering vessel sees approval

As the international shipping industry seeks to reduce emissions and contribute to achieving net zero targets, Malaysia-based shipping company LNG Marine Sdn Bhd has been approved to develop Malaysia’s first ever liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering vessel concept.

As LNG shipping advances the industry has seen an increase in size of LNG-fuelled ships. LNG trucks used for smaller bunkering operations at terminals are not able to keep up with this higher demand, creating a need for LNG Bunkering Vessels (LNG BVs).

The Approval in Principle (AiP), granted by leading certification company Bureau Veritas, stipulated that the design met all technical and regulatory requirements, in addition to necessary safety standards.

Commenting on the AiP, Ahmad Sufian Abdul Rashid, Chairman, LNG Marine Sdn Bhd, said, “The demand for LNG as fuel in the South East Asia Region is set to increase in line with IMO (International Maritime Organisation)’s sustainability agenda and the industry’s wider push towards net zero carbon.”
