Intelligent Energy, a developer of hydrogen fuel cells based in the United Kingdom, has produced a new fuel cell system that has successfully provided power to mobile network towers in India.
This represents a major milestone in the commercialisation of fuel cells and further establishes their value in the telecommunications space. The fuel cell system was deployed through Intelligent Energy’s subsidiary, Essential Energy India. The subsidiary is also providing power management services for those using this fuel cell system.
Intelligent Energy’s Indian subsidiary, Essential Energy, has more than 10,000 telecom towers under contract for power management services. The vast majority of these towers are currently powered by diesel generators and batteries when the power grid is down. Following the successful operation of Intelligent Energy’s fuel cell unit at a single site in India, over time Essential Energy expects a majority of telecom tower sites within its estate to be capable of the transition from traditional power supplies to hydrogen fuel cell based solutions.

Fuel cells are often seen as a more economical way to power telecommunications towers. These energy systems use hydrogen to generate electrical power in a relatively efficiently manner. Fuel cells are also quite durable, allowing them to generate electrical power even in the midst of a major storm or other natural disaster. This ensures that telecommunications towers have access to the energy they need to operate effectively. Indian telecommunications firms have been showing a great deal of favour for these energy systems in recent years because of their economic prospects.
