Gazprom Neft has begun construction of a standalone 12,300-tonne-per-year-capacity hydrogen (H2) production unit at its Omsk refinery.
This processing facility will provide high-purity (99.9%) H2 for new and reconstructed hydrotreatment facilities, intended to reduce the sulphur content of motor-fuel components (blending agents). It will also eliminate hydrotreatment processes’ dependence on the rate of utilisation of catalytic reforming units, from which H2 is currently produced as a by-product.
The commissioning of a standalone H2 source will allow greater stability in the production of Euro-5 motor fuels, higher output of light petroleum products from the Omsk r efinery, and higher production volumes of high-octane gasolines. Implementation of the project is being implemented as part of a comprehensive modernisation programme at the Omsk refinery being undertaken by Gazprom Neft since 2008.
