A lack of commercially viable carbon dioxide (CO2) sources and carbon management are among the key challenges facing the GCC region, according to Edie Adaimy, Group Director for Business Development, Technology and Innovation at Gulf Cryo.
Addressing delegates on the second day of the Abu Dhabi MENA Industrials Gases 2022 conference – under a session entitled ‘Optimising a reduction in carbon emissions’ – he also cited high energy subsidies, CO2 fossil-based generation widely used in desalination, and lack of environmental regulations and decarbonisation policies as obstacles to overcome.
“On a structural level, the region should scale up carbon capture hubs, which would bring down CO2 prices in the market,” he said.
However, on the list of opportunities, CO2 is an unlimited added-value resource, recovered CO2 is a key contributor in decarbonising industries and governmental support for R&D and pilot projects exist in the region, he added.
