The natural gas system operator of Greece, DESFA, has signed a deal for a pilot project to turn urban waste into biomethane, a clean alternative fuel source.
Signed between DESFA, sustainable solutions company Polyeco and agricultural service Ergoplanning, the deal will see the three partners prepare a business plan for the project by the end of November 2022, with the final investment decision expected by the end of 2023.
The biomethane produced at the facility will be used as a substitute for natural gas to power DESFA’s compression stations in Nea Messimvria in Thessaloniki and Ampelia in Thessaly.
Commenting on the deal, Maria Rita Galli, CEO, DESFA, said, “Biomethane gas, as a renewable and locally produced fuel with a zero-carbon footprint, is a promising solution both for the transition to a green energy system at affordable cost and for significantly reducing energy dependency.”
