Germany-based cement manufacturer HeidelbergCement has announced its largest carbon capture project to date. Situated in Mitchell, Indiana at its US subsidiary Lehigh Hanson, the project could reduce approximately two million tonnes of CO2 per year.
With funding ($3.7mn) for the upcoming FEED study having been granted by the US Department of Energy, HeidelbergCement will evaluate the project’s feasibility, which aims to capture 95% of the local cement plant’s CO2 emissions.
Once captured, the CO2 will be stored in a local onshore reservoir in the Illinois Basin.
Currently undertaking eight large-scale initiatives worldwide, Dr. Dominik von Achten, Chairman of the Managing Board, HeidbergCement, revealed that carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) continues to be a key part of its climate strategy.
