Holcim joins Go4Zero to advance lower carbon cement production

The Belgian arm of cement manufacturing giant Holcim Group has joined an initiative that aims to create a carbon dioxide (CO2) transport network project to achieve carbon neutrality by the end of the decade.

By aligning itself with the Go4Zero programme started by Belgium-based energy infrastructure group Fluxys, Holcim Belgique (Holcim) will decarbonise its cement production process by constructing a new dry process clinker kiln that uses oxygen instead of air in the combustion process.

This concentrates CO2 in the exhaust gases of the kiln, making it ready for capture, purification, transport and ultimately (re)use and/or storage.

Located at its Obourg site in southwestern Belgium, the new kiln will replace the two current wet process kilns and will be capable of producing 6,000 tonnes of cement per day.
