Impose carbon taxes for using hydrocarbons, says Air Products Chairman

Carbon taxes and penalties should be imposed for using gray hydrogen and hydrocarbons, according to Seifi Ghasemi, Air Products’ Chairman, President and CEO.

Speaking at the Citi 2022 Basic Materials Conference, he said, “The whole reason the world wants blue or green hydrogen is because they’re saying there is an environmental cost to using the hydrocarbon. So if there is, there should be a price difference. If you’re going to make green hydrogen at the same price as gray, then what’s the point, people might or might not use it. There has to be a penalty, the environmental and health costs are significant.”

He turned to its NEOM project in Saudi Arabia, due to come on stream in 2026, saying it is probably seven years ahead of anyone who wants to do anything similar. It aims to produce 600 tonnes of green hydrogen daily.

“We’re in no hurry to sell the product – if you want to sell it today, there is a price, but three years from now, when people find all these hydrogen projects have been announced by three guys in a truck, the value of our product will go up significantly.”
