India to absorb 2.5 billion tonnes worth of carbon dioxide (CO2) by 2022

In its commitment towards reducing global warming, India has pledged to the global community that the country will cut carbon emissions by 33-35% by 2030.

Speaking at the Innovation Summit in Conference of Parties (COP)-21 summit in Paris recently, Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi said, “We will absorb at least 2.5 billion tonnes worth of carbon dioxide by enlarging our forest cover by 2022.”

This will be achieved by expanding renewable energy by adding 175 Gigawatts of renewable generation, the PM said.

The country will also reduce usage of fossil fuels to meets its energy needs. With a population of 1.25 billion and 300 million of whom are without access to energy, the country has decided to meet its energy needs over 40% from non-fossil fuels, the Indian PM stressed.
