INEOS lowers CO2 with $70m refurb at its Indonesia aromatics plant

The aromatics arm of global chemicals manufacturer INEOS, INEOS Aromatics, has invested $70m into modernising its purified terephthalic acid (PTA) plant in Merak, Indonesia, reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and increasing site capacity.

Included in the investment is the installation of a larger oxidation reactor, reconfiguration of the reactor’s heat recovery system and revamp of the process air compressor train – all set to reduce emissions per tonne by 15% and increasing site capacity from 500,000 tonnes to 575,000 tonnes per year. 

The plant – a major PTA supplier in the country – is set to increase the availability of PTA for the Indonesian market.
