Norwegian fertiliser company Yara International (Yara) has joined forces with Japan-based power generation company Kyushu Electric Power Co (Kyushu) to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in Japan through the establishment of clean ammonia supply chains.
By 2030 the country aims to have an import demand for the CO2-free fuel of three million tonnes and 30 million tonnes by 2050.
Through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the companies will develop a clean ammonia supply chain to Kyushu’s coal thermal power generation plants, in addition to developing a receiving and distribution system of the gas in the region.
‘Clean’ ammonia is seen by Japan as a component of its ‘net zero by 2050’ emissions target and comprises both blue and green ammonia. Blue utilises carbon capture and storage (CCS), while green is produced by using renewably derived hydrogen.
