Lancashire council in ‘trailblazing’ deployment of hydrogen-powered generator

A hydrogen-powered fuel generator has been successfully trialled at the Preston Western Distributor Road project’s M55 compound in Lancashire, UK.

Deployed by Lancashire County Council’s delivery partner, Costain, and hydrogen industry start-up Hydrologiq, the generator reduced carbon emissions from onsite operations by between 70 and 100%.

Powered by a mixture of grey and green hydrogen, the trial revealed that shifting from diesel to green hydrogen on a similar compound could save up to 11 tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) per month.

Funded through an innovation grant from the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), the trial aimed to showcase the benefits of using an EODev GEH2 fuel-cell and battery integrated generator, including quieter operations and water as the unit’s sole by-product, eliminating harmful NOx and particulates.
