Linde awarded new oxyfuel contract

French steel products producer Ascometal, has awarded Linde a second contract for Rebox oxyfuel solutions in reheating.

Four pit furnaces at Ascometal, Les Dunes are to be converted during 2007-2008 into full oxyfuel operation to boost the rolling mill capacity and reduce fuel consumption. Jean-Pierre Riegert, head of Technologies and Development at Ascometal, said: $quot;Rebox oxyfuel solutions will be implemented at Les Dunes, after its success in improving our utilization of existing equipment in the Fos-sur-Mer plant, achieving 33 per cent shorter heating time and 40 per cent lower fuel consumption with reduced emissions.$quot;

It has been clearly demonstrated in practice that if oxygen and not air is used to combust a fuel, all the heat transfer mechanisms; convection, conduction and radiation, can be promoted at the same time. This results in a faster and also more even heating process, which cuts the total heating time thus allowing for more production capacity and flexibility. The flue gas volumes are reduced by up to 80 per cent with no more need for bulky flue gas systems or recuperators.

Since 1990, Linde has installed Rebox oxyfuel solutions in over 100 reheat furnaces within the steel industry’s rolling mills, forge shops and annealing lines. Rebox has also been successfully applied in new furnaces where it has been proven to increase through put (tonne/hour) by up to 50 per cent.
