The launch of the space shuttle which transported the specially-designed freezer MELFI (Minus Eighty Degrees Laboratory Freezer for ISS), designed and built by The Linde Group, to the International Space Station recorded its first anniversary recently with no reported problems.
The cryosystem was commissioned by the European Space Agency and built by Linde, in collaboration with the EADS space technology group Astrium. Used to store biological samples at temperatures as low as minus 80oC, MELFI was transported into orbit by the Discovery space shuttle on 4th July 2006.
In addition to the model now orbiting the Earth, Linde has built two more complete units, which are currently being prepared for future use.
