German liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplier LIQVIS has worked with UK rail wagon hire company VTG Rail (VTG) to carry out trials to transport LNG by rail.
The project took place along the 800km stretch from Brunsbüttel Ports GmbH to a Uniper (owner of LIQVIS) power plant in Ingolstadt, Germany.
Transported in specially developed thermally insulated tank wagons, the project was intended to investigate rail as a safe, cost-effective way of transporting LNG across Europe without having to use shipping routes, road haulage or the pipeline network.
Calling it a ‘pipeline to go’, Heinz Jürgen Hiller, Business Development LNG Europe, VTG, said that the company’s LNG tank wagons can supply LNG to whole industries with a ‘voracious appetite’ for energy.
