Manchester Airport to become first UK airport with direct low carbon hydrogen fuel supply

The UK’s third largest airport has announced its plans to become the first UK airport with a direct supply of low carbon hydrogen fuel after signing a deal with the two founding partners of Government-backed decarbonisation project HyNet.

Affirmed through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the agreement will see the partners aim to accelerate the delivery of hydrogen to the aviation sector, including through the connection of Manchester Airport to a pipeline being developed by HyNet.

Hydrogen is set to play a major role in decarbonising aviation – a sector that produces around 2.1% of all human-induced CO2 emissions and 12% of CO2 emissions from all transport sources.

According to Manchester Airports Group (MAG), hydrogen-powered aircraft are expected to come into operation from the mid-2030s for short-haul journeys. A research projected conducted by FlyZero involving MAG estimated that the demand for liquid hydrogen at an airport the size of Manchester could be 6.5m litres a day by 2050.
