The Compressed Gas Association (CGA) presented an Environmental Recognition Award to Matheson Tri-Gas, Inc. and its parent company, Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corporation, for the development of MTG-Shieldâ„¢, an environmentally-friendly alternative to the use of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as a cover gas in molten magnesium production and casting.
MTG-Shieldâ„¢ is a novel integrated cover gas delivery system that can be used to directly replace sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) in molten magnesium applications. SF6 is the most potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential (GWP) 23,900 times that of CO2. This is the highest GWP of any compound identified to date.
Rick Kowey, Executive Vice President, Matheson Tri-Gas and Yutaka Kurosawa, Senior Managing Director of Development & Engineering, Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corporation, accepted the award at the CGA annual meeting, held on March 19, in St. Petersburg, Florida.
According to Rick Kowey, $quot;Alternatives to SF6 gases have been actively studied; however, prior to MTG-Shieldâ„¢, there has not been a viable replacement with a low global warming potential that is non-corrosive and non-toxic in nature.$quot;
