Matson has signed a $1bn contract with Philly Shipyard to build three new 3,600 TEU Aloha Class containerships which will feature dual fuel engines that can run on conventional marine fuel or liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Other energy-saving features include a ‘fuel-efficient hull design, environmentally safe double hull fuel tanks and freshwater ballast systems’. The deal was signed by subsidiary Matson Navigation Company, a leading US carrier in the Pacific.
While the two Aloha Class ships previously built for Matson by Philly Shipyard require some modification to operate with LNG, the new ships will be delivered LNG-ready.
Matson claims the 854-foot Aloha Class vessels are the largest containerships ever built in the US and designed to operate at speeds in excess of 23 knots.
