Methane leaks in biogas sector twice as much as previously thought

Despite biogas and biomethane being considered a more sustainable alternative to conventional non-renewable fuels, a newly released study from Imperial College London (ICL) has revealed that leaks along the biogas and biomethane supply chain could exceed previous estimates by two times, leading researchers to call for better monitoring and fixing of leaks.

Generated from the breakdown of organic matter, biogas, and its upgraded form biomethane could help mitigate harmful carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by providing a lower emission alternative to energy production.

Despite this, the ‘clean’ gases are not without their downsides and were found to be responsible for methane leaks at various points during production and distribution.
