Middle Eastern companies achieve 10,000th LNG cargo load at Ras Laffan Port, Qatar

Qatar’s only LNG export facility, the Ras Laffan Port, celebrated the landmark loading of its 10,000th liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo on 9th May 2016, thanks to a partnership between Middle Eastern companies Qatar Petroleum (QP), Qatargas and RasGas.

The milestone cargo load was stocked onto the Q-Max LNG carrier ‘Mozah,’ with the South Hook LNG terminal in UK as its end destination. The vessel is one of the largest types of LNG carrier in the world and is able to hold a maximum cargo of 260,000 m3 of LNG at a time.

The previous milestone, Ras Laffan Port’s 5,000th LNG shipment, was loaded in June 2011 – 15 years after the first loading in 1996, but this recent 10,000th cargo load was achieved over just a five-year period, signifying the acceleration and increased demand for using LNG as an alternative fuel source.

The companies all enthused about the recent accomplishment, with Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, President and CEO of state-owned corporation QP, kicking off the comments and stating, “It is a testament to all the hard work and dedication by QP, as well as Qatargas and RasGas. I am confident that this, and future milestones, will further cement Ras Laffan Port’s leading position as the premier port facility for cleaner energy.”
