NEL initiates feasibility study for large-scale hydrogen production from Norway

NEL ASA, the first dedicated hydrogen (H2) company on the Oslo Stock Exchange, has initiated a feasibility study to figure out the potential for large-scale H2 production in Norway, which can be exported to the European and Japanese markets.

The aim of the project is to study the viability, as well as enable the planning, construction and operation of a commercial decarbonised H2 production, liquefaction and export facility based on Norwegian fossil and renewable energy sources.

The project, entitled ‘Hyper,’ is in conjunction with a variety of other companies and organisations including SINTEF, Statoil, Linde Kryotechnik, Mitsubishi Corporation and the Institute of Applied Energy.

Project Hyper gives us a unique possibility to investigate and gain a deeper understanding of the different technological elements and interactions within H2 production

The project is planned and financed up to and throughout 2019, with a total cost estimated at NOK 20m ($2.4m). So far, it has received a NOK 14m ($1.7m) grant from the ENERGIX-programme of the Research Council of Norway, in addition to contributions from the project partners.
