New partnership to advance large-scale clean jet fuel production in the UK

Three UK-based companies are joining forces to accelerate Project Speedbird (Speedbird) – an initiative designed to develop cost-effective sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for commercial use in the UK.

Launched in 2021 by British Airways, Lanzajet and cleantech firm Nova Pangaea Technologies (NPT), Speedbird uses agricultural and wood waste taken from sustainable sources to turn into 102 million litres of SAF per year.

Having been granted nearly £500,000 by the Department for Transport’s (DfT) Green Fuels, Green Skies competition to fund initial feasibility studies, the initiative is now moving to the next stage of development.

To support this, the project has applied for the DfT’s Advanced Fuels Fund grant for additional funding, a move that could see the it becoming the UK’s first SAF facility utilising agricultural and wood waste taken from sustainable sources.
