Industrial gas sector specialist Nippon Gases is to participate in a new project that will aim to lower carbon emissions in the notoriously hard-to-abate steel sector.
The H-ACERO project is backed by a partnership of companies working together to use green hydrogen as an alternative energy source at various stages of the steel production process.
Financed by the Basque Government to the sum of €8.8m, H-ACERO is also part of a wider initiative to develop advanced technologies and new materials that will help achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
According to Nippon Gases, the project will involve four segments with one focusing on the development of advanced equipment, another based around consumables such as refractory and the last two relating to the fuel source (hydrogen) and the production process and its safety.
