Carbon dioxide (CO2) transportation development project Northern Lights JV (Northern Lights) has awarded a contract to Chinese Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. (DSIC) for the construction of two 7,500m3-capacity dedicated CO2 carriers.
To be ready by mid-2024, the 130m vessels will be used to transport liquid CO2 in bespoke pressurised cargo tanks from European emitters to Northern Lights’ Øygarden, Norway receiving terminal. Fuelled by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the carriers will feature CO2 emission mitigation methods such as wind assisted propulsion and air lubrication.
Calling it a ‘significant milestone’ for the company, Børre Jacobsen, Managing Director, Northern Lights, said, “The use of ships will enable the development of a flexible and efficient European infrastructure network for transport of CO2 captured by our industrial customers.”
“I am also very pleased that these ships will be built to keep their own emissions to a minimum through use of innovative technology.”
